Turmeric gets its colour from curcumin, a polyphenolic compound with exceptional staining power. Why Scrubbing Makes It Worse
The instinct when you see a haldi stain is to scrub hard. This is counterproductive. Marble has a Mohs hardness of around 3, making it softer than most kitchen cleaning pads. Scrubbing opens more micro-scratches, giving the curcumin more surface area to bond to and making future stains worse. Acidic cleaners like lemon juice or vinegar, commonly recommended in home remedies, chemically etch the calcite in marble, dulling the surface permanently.
What Actually Removes Fresh Turmeric
- Blot immediately, never wipe. Wiping spreads the stain laterally.
- Apply a paste of baking soda and water, leave for 10 minutes, then rinse with plain water. Baking soda is mildly alkaline and lifts curcumin without etching calcite.
- For set stains, a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (3%) can help, but always test on an inconspicuous area first.
- Never use lemon juice, vinegar, or any acidic cleaner on marble.
